New Degree Endorsement Program (12 credit hours):
Management for
Non-Profit Organizations
Beginning August 2006

According to recent data (2004) there are nearly 1.3 million non-profit community-based, functional, or charitable) institutions in the United States alone, employing approximately 12 million Americans, expending $120 billion in personnel costs, and $340 billion in annual budgets (John Hopkins Univ.-SAIS Career Services).
While a general job search of non-profit offerings indicates that most senior management positions, at least in larger organizations, require a master’s degree, many openings are still available for entry and mid-level managers and program directors that require only a bachelor’s degree and/or specified training. Our own experience in the OVU ADVANCE program has shown that locally, a number of non-profit employees have moved or were poised to move to management roles with less than a bachelor’s degree and required our degree completion program to strengthen their qualifications.
Accordingly, the OVU College of Professional Studies has developed a four module, 12-credit hour sequence in Management for Non-Profit Organizations, designed specifically for current enrollees in our ADVANCE program in Organizational Management, or other working professionals with previous management training or experience, to study in detail the operations, funding, financing, and legal/political aspects of not-for-profit entities.
In the Spring 2006 term, the OVU-CPS offered a successful trial offering in Resource Development and Grant-Writing for Non-Profits (3 credit hours). We have now scheduled the remaining three modules during the Fall 2006 term, and will repeat the Grant-Writing module in early 2007 for adult learners who missed our 2006 offering.
Modules to be offered are as follows:
BUS 441: Introduction to the Non-Profit Sector (3 credit hours)--Introduction to not-for-profit organizations and their unique organizational and structural characteristics. Topics will include qualifications for non-profit status in the U.S., overview of fund-raising, financial, and budgetary challenges unique to non-profits, program planning issues, boards of trustees, and a study of the non-profit sector from a historical, social, and economic perspective.
BUS 442: Management in Non-Profit Organizations (3 credit hours)--Application of management and leadership topics to not-for-profit organizations, including issues of motivation, management, supervision, and evaluation of professional staff and volunteers, and working with boards of trustees. Prerequisite: MGT 330, MGT 492, or an introductory course in management.
BUS 444: Financial Management of Non-Profit Organizations (3 credit hours): Survey of financial and accounting topics unique to not-for-profit entities, including budgeting and fund accounting requirements, cash management, investment decision-making, understanding financial statements, audit requirements, and ethical issues relating to non-profit finances. Prerequisite: ACC 393 or an introductory course in business finance. A previous course in financial accounting is also strongly recommended.
(To be repeated in 2007) BUS 443: Resource Development and Grant-Writing for Non-Profits (3 credit hours)--Focus on the practice and management of fund-raising programs, including ethical and legal issues and practical applications in current funding of not-for profit organizations. Topics will include operational and capital campaign strategies, overview of planned giving structures, review of available funding sources and the preparation of a grant proposal.
